USEPA National Research Award

The Ohio State University's research accomplishments and expertise on the beneficial utilization of Coal Combustion Products (CCPs) have been recognized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA’s) Coal Combustion Products Partnership (C2P2) with the 2008 award for research.

The C2P2 program is a cooperative effort of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, US Department of Energy, US Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service, US Federal Highway Administration, American Coal Ash Association, Utility Solid Waste Activities Group, and Electric Power Research Institute to help promote the beneficial use of CCPs and the environmental benefits that result from their use.

The award was presented by Susan P. Bodine, Assistant Administrator for USEPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, on July 2, 2008 at the 40th anniversary meeting of the American Coal Ash Association held in Washington, DC. Ms. Bodine remarked, “By using 15 million tons of coal fly ash, our nation reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the annual emissions of nearly 2.5 million passenger vehicles.”

Receiving the award which recognizes nearly 20 years of CCP research and outreach at OSU, were Professor William E. Wolfe and Dr. Tarunjit S. Butalia of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science.

The OSU CCP research and outreach efforts are sponsored by the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority's Coal Development Office along with other federal and state agencies, private industry, and trade associations.

Mark R. Shanahan, Executive Director of the Ohio Air Quality Development Office and Energy Advisor to Governor of Ohio said, "The work of Dr. Wolfe and Dr. Butalia has truly advanced the science and practice of better use of coal combustion products. This is an important contribution to more economical and more environmentally responsible use of Ohio coal. We are proud to support their work and applaud this national recognition.”

Using coal combustion products conserves natural resources, conserves energy, is cost effective, and helps to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
